Applications are currently being reviewed for 2013 Coast Guard Foundation scholarships. Our scholarship program, which benefits the dependents of enlisted personnel, is one of the most popular areas of support. The Foundation is proud to support the families of brave Coast Guard men and women who are pursuing the dream of higher education. For the past 20 years, we've given out more than $2.4 million in scholarships, helping 250 students defray the costs of college.
The Foundation's commitment to educational assistance to the men and women of the Coast Guard and their dependents has grown immensely, and is now one of our primary areas of support. We hope to expand these endowments for the benefit of additional worthy candidates going forward.

Sadly, we've had to turn away a number of highly qualified applicants in recent years, because demand has been too great. In the past two years, 21 students with GPAs above 3.5 were not awarded any scholarship money. Seventeen of those applicants are currently enrolled in college, and nine of the students were members of the National Honor Society, which requires academic excellence and substantial community service.
