In 2008, rescue swimmer Petty Officer Third Class Abram Heller, was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross by the President of the United States for the heroism he displayed during a search and rescue mission in which he saved many crew members of a sinking fishing vessel. Petty Officer Heller, while working in pitch black icy waters, disentangled several men who were caught in the sinking ship's fishing gear.
