The Coast Guard Foundation Spouse Education Grant program has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of Coast Guard families since it began in 2010. Coast Guard spouses support their service members and families, and for their dedication and sacrifice we are honored to support them by making education more affordable.

Last year, through our Lisa Cook Reed Spouse Education Grant, the Foundation awarded $60,000 for spouses of active duty enlisted Coast Guard members - our largest single award-year yet.

One of this year’s awardees is Jamie Covarrubias who is enrolled in a Early Childhood Education degree at Cleveland State University after transferring from Georgia State University.

Jamie and her husband Petty Officer Joshua Covarrubias married in July 2015 and have been together since 2007. The couple have been stationed near Cleveland, Ohio, for little over a year with the experience proving to be both rewarding and challenging.

“Being a Coast Guard spouse has not always been the easiest, between leaving my family and friends in Georgia and learning how to live alone, but in the end it has been worth it,” she says. “I have learned a lot about myself and definitely learned how to manage my time in order to prioritize school, work, and our relationship.”

Jamie’s goal is to earn her doctorate in educational law in order to improve education on a national level. She knew from a young age she wanted to become a teacher and go on to make a difference in young people’s lives.

I want to become a teacher because I want to give children the opportunity to be anything they want to be and also know that they can achieve that dream,” said Jamie. “It is incredibly important to me that all children no matter their ability, gender, ethnicity, or demographic background have an equal opportunity with their education.

Frequent moves and deployments make college and professional training challenging for our Coast Guard families, and a lack of financial resources can provide even more roadblocks to success, so we’re proud to support Jamie and all of our spouses through the Lisa Cook Reed Fund.
